Instead of moving in the direction of making all apps hosted in the “cloud” to make the local OS irrelevant, wouldn’t it be easier to put the local OS into the cloud? That way we get to keep the apps without having to re-invent them and still be able to access them from anywhere. For example, what if your computer where you have your word processor was accessible from anywhere at any time (like gotomypc but better, it could also be rebooted and turned on / off from anywhere so would not have to be “online” all the time, only when you needed it to be)… so your “computer” would really only be an instance within the cloud where all your programs and data is stored. So from any computer with web access, you can access your full “computer”. Then the need for web apps like google docs, etc is not as useful, since you can do the same accessing your “computer”. So really, instead of trying to break the different apps that we traditionally used locally on our PC and turned them into “web apps” that are accessible with any browser… why not make the whole thing accessible with any browser? That way, you don’t have to re-invent the wheel (the apps that already exist on our local machines) – you just change the way it’s accessed. So any device connected to the internet then becomes a window to which you can access your “computer” from anywhere. Hmmm.
